Abstract
A year and a half ago, in the article Do We Need Literature? [Nuzhna li nam literature?] (Znamia, 1990, no. 12), I argued with those who foresaw or even attested to a profound crisis in literature and a fundamental break in attitudes toward it in our country. Not agreeing with these opinions, I asserted that the situation was temporary, that literature would become the most important spiritual phenomenon among us, as before, comparable only to religion in its influence over people, and that a new dawn of literature was just over the hills.
