Abstract

The aim of the paper is to reveal the variety of opportunities for money extraction from intellectual property, which differentiate it from the rest of assets and which are very often not known and underestimated. At the same time, if properly utilised, they can make the asset owner more competitive. The paper categorises them into traditional forms of money extraction, forms, specific for the intellectual property and forms of intellectual property utilisation for financing. The paper also explores the statutory environment and the level of utilisation of these opportunities by Bulgarian companies on the basis of empirical evidences. It concludes that this level of utilisation is low mainly because of the lack of prolonged experience under the conditions of market economy, including the insufficient knowledge of intellectual property. Nevertheless, the variety of the ways of realisation of most of the forms shows that this would probably change with time.
