Abstract

The basic feature of the HPD system is the use of a spot of light to execute a regular rectangular scan over the whole bubble chamber picture. Indvidual bubbles are digltized to an accuracy of about 450 deg C in a 3 . These digitizings are transmitted directly to an on-line general purpose digital computer. Production versions of this machine were built and are beginning to operate at CERN, Brookhaven, and Berkeley. The three machines are based on the same principles but have different layouts-and accordingly have different advantages and inconveniences. Special scanning tables are being developed, and steps are being taken to incorporate ionization density measurements into the program. (A.G.W.)
