Abstract

The last two decades saw an explosive growth of research activities in non–destructive testing and quality control of a broad variety of tribological materials and units. The substantial amount of data has been accumulated to date, proving the efficiency of the modern acoustic emission (AE) technique for tribological examinations of various materials and coatings. In the present work, we review the available knowledge on this topic and align it with our original investigations, bridging standard tribological practice and modern AE technologies aimed at enhancing reliability and effectiveness of testing. Special attention is paid to quantification of the correlation between the AE features and friction induced damage.
