Abstract

Loss minimization is an operational aspect in the distribution system to have better planning and efficient network with economic benefits. The traditional network with addition of distributed energy sources as distributed generation has now been moved to active network from passive. Reactive power management with deployment capacitors is another operational aspect, however, with DGs and capacitors placements in the system require attention of the distribution network operators for better operation of the system minimizing the losses taking into account the impact of the increased demand. This study outlines the determination of minimizing power loss and improvement of voltage profile with the presence of the Distributed Generation (DG) and a shunt capacitor in a distribution system. In this paper result is obtained by two approaches: (i) JAYA algorithm to optimally place and determination of size for DG and capacitor, (ii) Hybrid approach by combining sensitivity-based index VSI to find location of DGs and capacitors and obtaining sizes using JAYA. The obtained results with the two approaches are compared and analysed. Results is obtained for IEEE 34 bus radial distribution system (RDS).
