Abstract

This article covers many advance‐planning issues and is a culmination of the wisdom of professionals who restored water and wastewater service in Florida after four hurricanes struck the state in 2004. The article discusses the types of damage to anticipate and the importance of up‐to‐date and well‐rehearsed emergency response plans (ERPs), along with the ability to communicate with the system network, coworkers, and customers, the ability to locate facilities, driving directions and protecting buildings and facilities, fuel, transportation and power, safe storage and handling of hazardous chemicals, and personnel issues.
