Abstract

Although Mikhail Bakhtin insists that poetic style is a closed system, he acknowledges that real live poets have to live in a polyglot world: Of course this relationship to his own language (in greater or lesser degree) could never be foreign to a historically existent poet, as a human being surrounded by living hetero- and polyglossia; but this relationship could not find a place in the poetic style of his work without destroying that style, without transposing it into a prosaic key and in the process turning the poet into a writer of prose.
