Abstract

This study determined the level of Reading Skills and the English Language Performance of CollegeFreshmen of Sultan Kudarat State University. Findings of which served as bases for implementing a teaching guide in Reading. This descriptive research employed a quantitative approach on the data gathered from the students whereas a qualitative approach from the teachers. The variables on Students’ Profile, Level of Reading Skills, and English Language Performance were tested for a relationship using the Pearson –r test. The freshmen’s Reading Comprehension Skill was “Passing, while their English Language Performance was Average.” Students had learning difficulties in vocabulary, comprehen- sion, and articulation. The university had no Reading Laboratory. Individual reading and cooperative development were the most utilized teaching strategies, while argumentation and debate were the least utilized. There were no uniform reading materials, but the students were interested and open to modern methods of learning. The freshmen profile had no significant effect on their Reading Comprehension Skills and English Language Performance. Reading Comprehension Skills significantly affected their English Language Performance.
