Abstract
AbstractFor over thirty years reading educators, administrators, departments of public instruction, and members of the general public have encouraged and, in some cases, directed postelementary teachers to incorporate reading instruction in all their content area courses. Have these admonitions been effective? Do postelementary teachers teach reading as an integral part of their content area courses? And if so, how do they do it? This review was undertaken in an attempt to find some answers to these questions by examining the professional publications of post elementary content area educators and reading educators. Much post elementary reading instruction is still offered in specialized developmental and corrective or remedial courses. But there is some evidence of an awareness of reading needs in the content areas and of content area teachers’ willingness to take responsibility for responding to those needs.
