Abstract

The letters from the Cairo Geniza are among the most important types of documentary source material available for those interested in the history of the Jewish communities in the Arabic-speaking world during the Middle Ages. At first utilized primarily for the factual information they provide about individuals, events, and communal institutions, these texts have of late begun to be reexamined in terms of their importance as material objects, their linguistic and literary dimensions, and the social contexts in which they were produced and read. Growing attention has also been given to those features that distinguish different genres of letter writing.
