Abstract

AbstractThe market economy and economic growth have been important reasons for the sixth mass extinction of species and the climate crisis looming ahead. The fundamental cause of this is the prevalence of an anthropocentric perspective on life, according to which mankind has a right to exploit nature and other species to its own advantage in furtherance of its own development. This perception has its roots in an interpretation of the Judeo-Christian account of the Creation given in Genesis 1:28. This interpretation is, however, one-sided and open to dispute, and this article will propose an alternative, based on a broader, more comprehensive reading including other verses in Genesis.KeywordsAnthropocentrismInterpretation of genesisMass extinctionClimate crisis
