Abstract

This paper will begin by discussing various aspects of reading ability and the use of the new media of CD‐ROM and the Internet by children and young people in Germany. The paper will then consider how public libraries see their role in promoting competence in the use of these media and will briefly examine the statistics to assess the current provision, particularly in children's and young people's libraries, of the new media. Currently, the media educational activities of children's libraries are proving more colourful and varied than their multi‐media collections. Some examples from practice will demonstrate this.
