Abstract
I read with interest the article by Nitta et al.1 A validated biofluid (blood or CSF) or imaging biomarker for sports-related concussion (SRC) remains elusive, but the search continues. Different grades of SRC are encountered, ranging from a football player getting his bell rung, but with no accompanying loss of consciousness, to an athlete getting knocked out in the field with accompanying loss of consciousness and posttraumatic amnesia of varying duration. Did the levels of the serum inflammatory markers measured correlate with the severity of the concussion, and did normalization of the inflammatory markers correlate with resolution of postconcussion symptoms? An ideal SRC biomarker would be able to accurately identify a concussed athlete and help guide medical decision-making about return to play.
