Abstract

After a short historical introduction, the article explains the roles of the NHS Centre for Coding and Classification, Computer Aided Medical Systems Ltd and the Scottish Clinical Coding Centre. The structure of the Read Clinical Classification (the Read Codes) is then described, its relationships to the other widely used classifications, and the potential which the codes have for use as the standard for the coding of clinical data.
