Abstract

Oxidation-reduction reactions of the hexafluorides of the third row transition metals rhenium, osmium and iridium with a selected series of reductants have been studied. The results have shown that oxidant strength increases progressively from rhenium hexafluoride to iridium hexafluoride. The results of this study have also been correlated with those of previous investigations in this series, and with other studies on the hexafluorides of the third row transition metals. New preparative routes have been discovered for OsF 5, IrF 5, IrF 4 and the hexafluorometallate(V) salts, as well as the preparation of Os(PF 3) 2F 4, a trifluorophosphine complex of Os(IV).
