Abstract

The mutagen MX, 2-chloro-3-(dichloromethyl)-4-oxo-butenoic acid, reacted quickly with chlorine at pH 7.2 in water but reacted slowly at pH 3 when present in the furanone form, 3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone. The Ames-mutagenicity (TA 100, - S9) was reduced in direct proportion to the decrease in the MX amount. Thus the reaction products formed were much less mutagenic or not mutagenic at all. The dicarboxylic acids, Z- and E-2-chloro-3-(dichloromethyl)-butendioic acids, being potential oxidation products derived from MX, were determined but they may be regarded as minor reaction products.
