Abstract

The reactions of HCl, HBr, Cl 2, I 2, ICl or CF 3I with some trimethyl, triphenyl or phenyl(pentafluorophenyl) Group IV metal—transition metal derivatives containing MFe (M = Si, Ge or Sn) and SnM′ (M′ = Mn, Cr, Mo, or W) bonds are described. The reactions of HCl or HBr with systems containing SnFe or SnM′ bonds, and Cl 2 with those containing SnMn bonds resulted in partial or complete replacement of the organic groups bound to tin. In all other reactions, cleavage of the metal—metal bond occurred. Some of the factors affecting the relative reactivity of the Group IV metal—carbon and metal—metal bonds towards these reagents are discussed.
