Abstract

Core–shell lattices with a polystyrene core and a polystyrene/butyl acrylate shell with more than 40% solid contents were produced using a combination of sodium dodecyl maleate hemiester as anionic surfactant and styrenic block copolymer of butylene oxide and ethylene oxide as nonionic surfactant. Stable lattices able to resist rather high concentrations of electrolytes can be obtained, provided a careful protocol of the addition of surfactants is used. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
