Abstract
PLZT gels were prepared from lead acetate hydrate, lanthanum acetate hydrate, titanium isopropoxide and zirconium n-propoxide in methoxyethanol by the sol-gel method. For the purpose of the present study 1HNMR and GLC analyses were performed for quantitative determination of the volatile reaction products formed during the sol preparation. It was found that Pb and La acetates partly reacted with methoxyethanol in the first step of sol preparation. The results also indicated that Zr and Ti propoxides reacted with the acetates during refluxing. In addition, significant alcoholysis of Ti and Zr propoxides also occurred. On the basis of the results the extent of precursor conversion was calculated.
