Abstract

In this study, binuclear Cu(II) and Cd(II) complexes of the type M2(sal-p-pda)2 and the mononuclear complex Co(sal-p-pdaH)2(H2O)2 have been synthesized. The Schiff base ligand (sal-p-pdaH2) is derived from the condensation of p-phenylenediamine (p-pda) and salicylaldehyde (sal). The reactions of tin(IV) tetrachloride with the Schiff base and its binuclear Cu(II) and Cd(II) and mononuclear Co(II) complexes have been investigated. Characterization of the Schiff base and its complexes was accomplished by elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibility, IR and far-IR spectra. According to these data, probable structures have been assigned to these complexes. A number of tin(IV) Schiff base complexes of the types Co(sal-p-pdaH)2(H2O)2Sn2Cl8 and SnCl4(sal-p-pdaH2) are also described. Probable structures have been suggested for these complexes based on the available evidence.
