Abstract
1. The reaction ofα-ethylvanillyl alcohol,α-ethylveratryl alcohol, and also eugenol with sodium bisulfite solutions were investigated over a wide pH range at 135°. 2. As well as sulfo derivatives, these model compounds give a certain amount of dimers with an indan structure. The relative yields of unchanged monomer, sulfo derivative, and dimer depend on the nature of the model compound and the reaction conditions.
