Abstract

1. A study has been made of the electrophilic replacement of mercury by iodine in benzylmercury chloride. 2. The reaction kinetics have been measured by two methods: spectrophotometrically and titrometrically. 3. The reaction of benzylmercury chloride with iodine in the presence of cadmium iodide in 70% aqueous dioxane is second order over-all, and first order with respect to each of the components. 4. The parameters of the Arrhenius equation have been determined: E=10.8 kcal/mole, log A=7.7, and entropy of activation A S= -23.3 entropy units at 20°.
