Abstract

Since the discovery of the novel dinitrogen complex in [Ru(NH3)5(N2)]X2 (X = Br, I, BF4 or PF6) by Allen and Senoff in 1965,1 extensive studies have been carried out on the preparation of dinitrogen complexes and their reactivities and nitrogen coordinating ability is now known in almost all transition metals. Detailed knowledge of the bonding of dinitrogen to transition metals and the reactivity of coordinated dinitrogen may contribute not only to our understanding of the function of the active site of the natural enzyme, nitrogenase, but also to the design of effective catalysts for the conversion of molecular nitrogen into such compounds as nitrogen hydrides and organo-nitrogen compounds under mild conditions. In this review we will describe the recent advances in the studies of dinitrogen and related complexes with major emphasis on the reactions of coordinated dinitrogen in well characterized dinitrogen complexes. The reader is also referred to a number of reviews for chemical and biological studies on nitrogen fixation.2–7
