Abstract

1. Study has been made of the13C NMR spectra of various monosubstituted benzoyl compounds and their complexes with aluminum chloride and other Lewis acids. Values of σp+, a measure of the electron-acceptor activity of the functional group as modified by complexing, were determined from the CS of the C atom in the p position of the benzene ring. 2. Study has been made of the13C NMR spectra of the 1∶2 complexes of benzoyl compounds with AlCl3 and AlBr3, and the structures of these complexes are discussed.
