Abstract

Cross sections as a function of reagent collision energy are measured for the reaction of Al + ( 1 S) with NO 2 , N 2 O, and CO 2 by using guided-ion-beam mass spectrometry. In the NO 2 system, NO + +AlO and AlO + +NO are formed in endothermic reactions. The threshold for the former reaction is used to measure the bond energy, D o 0 (AlO)=123.1±1.0 kcal/mol, in good agreement with the presently accepted value of 121.2±2.2 kcal/mol.
