Abstract
AbstractThe reduction of optically active 6‐chloro‐2,6‐dimethyloctane to 2,6‐dimethyloctane by a solution of an alkali metal in liquid ammonia proceeds with predominating retention of configuration. It is concluded that the reaction proceeds via carbanions. The mechanism of the reaction is discussed. The absolute configuration of (+)‐2.6‐dimethyloctane was determined by synthesis from (S)‐(−)‐2‐methylbutanol‐1.
