Abstract

This chapter considers the effects of humic substances (HS) on solutions of model inorganic pollutants, metal salts – K3[Fe(СN)6] and CuSO4. Bioluminescent system of coupled enzymatic reactions catalyzed by NAD(P)H-FMN oxidoreductase and bacterial luciferase was used as a bioassay to monitor toxicity of salt solutions in the presence and absence of HS. Ability of HS to decrease or increase general toxicity of the solutions was revealed. The rates of redox reaction in bioluminescent assay system were analyzed in the absence and presence of HS. Acceleration of NADH auto-oxidation by HS was supposed to result in toxicity increase. Acceleration of endogenous NADH-dependent redox reactions in the bioluminescent assay system is supposed to be responsible for detoxification of the salt solutions.
