Abstract
Percina nigrofasciata, Ammocrypta beani, and Etheostoma swaini respond to conspecific skin extract with an alarm reaction which consists of remaining motionless or showing greatly reduced activity. This freezing response was often preceded by rapid darting in E. swaini and accompanied by cryptic colouration and movement to cover in both E. swaini and P. nigrofasciata. Percina nigrofasciata and E. swaini responded significantly to extracts of the other two species. Ammocrypta beani showed a significant response to P. nigrofasciata extract but not to extract from E. swaini. All three species possess darter-type club cells in their epidermis.
