Abstract
Exposure of 10 volunteers to 0.5% CO for 2.5 to 3.5 min resulted in COHb levels similar to that of heavy smokers: 3.95 +- 1.87% (SD) as calculated from alveolar air analyses. This resulted in a less efficient exercise (greater O/sub 2/ debt for equal work) as well as some barely significant changes, including reduced inspiratory capacity, total lung capacity, and resting pulmonary diffusing capacity and increased maximum breathing capacity. Same changes were seen in smokers as compared with nonsmokers.
