Abstract

The decomposition of nitrous oxide on nickel powder and on nickel supported on γ-alumina and silica was studied. The reaction proceeds according to the equation N 2O + Ni s = Ni s-O + N 2. Simultaneous measurements of the kinetics and thermal effects of the reaction indicated that the uptake of oxygen in the course of nitrous oxide decomposition proceeds in two stages: (i) fast chemisorption on the Ni surface until the O/Ni s ratio approaches 0.3–0.4 and (ii) nucleation and growth of islands of the surface nickel oxide until a closed layer is obtained. Decomposition of nitrous oxide on nickel supported of γ-alumina and silica proceeds similarly to that on nickel powder.
