Abstract
Treatment of indoles with a variety of electron deficient olefins under the influence of Yb(OTf)3⋅3H2O leads to alkylation of the indoles at the 3-position in moderate to excellent yields. This mild coupling procedure may offer a convenient entry into the hapalindole class of marine alkaloids.
