Abstract

The following is a portion of a conversation-style presentation of the two recipients of the Donald E. Francke Medal for 2006, Philip J. Schneider and Thomas S. Thielke. They discuss their work in international pharmacy and what they have learned from their interactions with pharmacists worldwide. Thielke: The first International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) meeting I attended was in 1989 in Munich, Germany. I was prepared for my first FIP meeting by Phil Schneider, who attended the FIP meeting the previous year in Sydney, Australia. He walked me through the agenda before the meeting, so I was prepared to attend the required educational sessions and social events. Joe Oddis sponsored my trip to the meeting, as I was representing ASHP in the FIP Council meeting. Joe was the FIP president at the time and introduced me at the business meetings, educational sessions, and social events. I had such a great time and learned so much that I immediately wanted to become involved with FIP and international pharmacy.
