Abstract

ABSTRACT We examine how lineage elders in a rural northern Vietnamese village weave textual evidence into oral lineage histories. Through amateur historical detective work and performative rituals of belonging, lineage elders creatively manoeuvre around historical ambiguity to establish connections with prestigious historical figures and lineage branches elsewhere to claim local and national prestige.
