Abstract

The reversed-frame multivariable control system design method, developed by Hung and MacFarlane, has the difficulty caused by irrational functions. In this paper, the authors show that this difficulty can be removed by using the strict gain-balancing technique. It is also shown that this design method has some similarity to the classical multivariable system design methods, though it possesses doubtlessly better robustness properties. Owing to this similarity, the reversed-frame design method can, in certain cases, conceal the existence of uncontrollable or unobservable undesired modes of motion, which is obviously a disadvantage. The authors then give some suggestions concerning the application of this design method to difficult plants — unstable or badly oscillatory ones and non-minimal phase ones.
