Abstract

AbstractMaternal serum hCG, hPL and progesterone concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay in patients with normal pregnancy, threatened abortion, missed abortion and retarded abortion in early pregnancy which could be diagnosed by real‐time ultrasonography.Much lower hormone levels were observed in patients with missed and retarded abortion than in the other two groups; the critical levels for fetal viability were 104 mIU hCG/ml, 0.1 μg hPL/ml and 10 ng progesterone/ml.In week 12 to 13 of pregnancy, the serum hPL and progesterone levels in patients with threatened abortion were significantly lower than those in normal pregnancy, but serum hCG levels in the two groups were not significantly different.Serial sampling revealed that these hormone levels increased in several cases after fetal death.
