Undoubtedly the number of ST1 run-through posts could be expanded, and this should be a focus for training programme directors (TPDs) across the country to work with their core surgical training (CST) programme directors to expand this number. Undertaking only one year in the foundation programme unfortunately failed to get approval from the General Medical Council (GMC).
