Abstract

Recent developments in construction research has been in identifying waste in process flow. This extended review article discusses aspects of wastes in relation to lean construction, while suggesting improvements within & beyond the lean portfolio. Further, discussions on recent developments in waste formulations and its impact on construction flow is covered. The article further fine tunes into recommendations within construction process improvement by inductive reasoning whenever possible. The proposals include integrating two currently applied philosophies/methodology in construction management for better identification of waste, i.e. project management & lean construction. This is for facilitating the identifying and quantification of theoretical overruns and waste in process flow. The integration is done by visualizing construction process as a combination of two basic entities: Construction activities (CA) and Construction process support activities (CPSA). Finally, the entire construction process is proposed as a combination of CAs and CPSAs identifying itself as a non Markovian stochastic process which integrates classic project management techniques with lean construction. And in the flow thus modeled, wastes and overruns could be identified separately.
