Abstract

In contrast to huge efforts in the area of thin films and bulk materials there exists little work for preparation and application of superconducting thick films. Inspite of the limited efforts, the REBCO thick films are presently emerging as potential candidates for commercial applications. A major progress in the area of thick film manufacture and applications can be anticipated from a future intensified research based on the current developments. This progress might arise from identifying/developing suitable substrate materials, adopting the processing methods known from bulk melt processing like infiltration processing or multiple seeding, from investigating specific effects of two-dimensional constrained growth or from exploiting specific properties or superficial modifications of the support-material. The present paper summarizes recent developments in this direction including an overview of REBaCuO thick film processing methods. New directions for the manufacture of single grain and biaxially textured thick films based on the bulk melt texturing principles are discussed. Benefits and importance of thick films are highlighted.
