Abstract

Fidell et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 74, 888–893 (1983)] have presented a study of community reaction to blast noise from three mining sites. Fidell et al. observed a stronger relationship between high centiles of ground vibration levels and annoyance than between average vibration levels and annoyance. They judged from the correlations that ‘‘a centile‐related threshold model of blast‐induced annoyance yields a more adequate account of the data than the ... equal energy model’’ (p. 891). In this letter it is suggested that this conclusion is not warranted from the data presented by Fidell et al.
