Abstract

Arteriovenous (AV) access has primary failure rates of up to 46%, according to a recent series,1 with one year patency ranging 52 – 83%. These results mean that re-hospitalisations are often necessary, especially in the first year following AV access creation. The study by Coscas et al.2 underlines this ongoing and recurrent problem through an epidemiological study based on the French National Database. However, it is unsurprising to find a high frequency of re-admissions and re-interventions (i.e., a 63% rate of re-hospitalisation, with 53% of re-operations mainly due to primary failure and early stenosis).
