Abstract

Operated shoulder rehabilitation consists to recover range of motion (ROM) in elevation and rotations through a self-mobilization program in these directions. Immediate postoperative swimming pool rehabilitation makes it easier. A 2-page photographic protocol is sufficient to expose the whole protocol. This guide of ROM recovery is useful for the patient to make his exercises and for the therapist to control them. The physiatrist follows the evolution, measures in a normalized manner the ROM, controls the exercises and medically treats any difficulty. Non operated but painful shoulder actually does not need rehabilitation if it is perfectly flexible, strictly comparable to the other side. The only indication we keep for rehabilitation is the recovery of ROM for stiff shoulders, even if ROM limitation is only 10°. We use the same protocol as for the operated shoulders. Exercises and ROM are controlled at the time of consultation. Persistent painful stiffness is treated with a suprascapular nerve block under fluoroscopic control, with an immediate checking in the time of consultation.
