Abstract

Life in big cities is getting harder every day. Local governments are trying to find ways to use smart city concepts to make cities more livable. However, smart city concepts face many challenges because the technologies used for them, such as LoRa Wan,2g, and 3G, are expensive and difficult to implement in large areas. Cheaper and easy to implement, FM Radio Data System (RDS) is a more effective technology for some applications. Many people use FM RDS technology in daily life, such as in their cars, phones and FM radio receivers to get the station name or “now playing song” text. We propose a new usage of FM RDS technology for smart cities. We develop a prototype and show that the proposed system is feasible and reliable under normal conditions. We show that our proposed system is cheaper and more scalable than other technologies for typical smart city applications, at the expense of robustness to unreliability of communication.
