Abstract

Taking as a starting point the results obtained from an enquiry I had previously undertaken on the inclusion of Tupi in missionaries' and travellers' texts (of the 16th and 17th centuries), I shall examine the successive «re-publications» of these same texts in the 19th century, to ascertain what was presented as «annotations» or as «updated information». I have added to this initial corpus by also drawing on 19th centuiy European travelogues. It is thus possible to apprehend the numerous ways of integrating the «difference» that these languages represent in relation to the collective knowledge of the Old World, as well as to the history of the development of American Indian linguistics in Brazil.
