Abstract

In order to prevent the collapse of existing structures not having sufficient seismic resistant capacity, some structural device is required to be appropriately provided. This paper is focused on the development of structural measures to prevent the catastrophic failure of the existing structures under severe earthquakes by installing stacked cubic-hollow steel blocks beside the columns, which will share the loads instead when the columns have lost the load bearing capacities. The effectiveness of the proposed measures was validated experimentally by laboratory tests conducted under various conditions.
