Abstract

The Lancet Oncology Commission1 on cancer control in sub-Saharan Africa makes a valuable contribution to identifying key challenges and offering recommendations in addressing a crisis that deserves greater attention. The Commission points out the scarcity of data and the need for cancer registries in the region; highlights the dearth of diagnostic facilities and suggests the avenue of public financing; notes the priority of safety in the use of radiating technologies and the crucial role of training; and calls for further investment in treatments, including radiotherapy, which it describes as a “critical and inseparable component of comprehensive cancer care”.
