Abstract

An analysis of light propagation through tapered hyperbolic secant planar waveguides is made from geometrical optics. Ray-tracing equations are obtained and angle and position transformations and numerical aperture conversion are calculated in order to design typical devices for integrated optics. The results are applied to a special type of taper function called convergent parabolic profile.
