Abstract
Rational solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili ( KP) and modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili ( mKP) equations in Wronskian form are constructed for the first time. The relationship between the Wronskian technique and Hirota's bilinear formalism is discussed. It is shown that each pair of KP solutions giving rise to a mKP solution is connected via the KP-Bäcklund transformation.
