Abstract

Critique of Rational Choice Theory as it is employed in Political Science, starting by examining Anthony Downs's Economic Theory of Democracy, then using Green and Shapiro to illustrate fallacies, with additional analysis. Discussion of free rider problem and collective action, rational choice theory and suicide. Speculative suggestions for reform in conclusion, centered on Jeffersonian notions of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness with a basis in Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
