Abstract
Economics of scale can assume unusual importance in the case of pumped storage schemes involving underground reservoirs. The paper proposes an approach to define the presently attainable maximum ratings for generator/motors in the 514-1200 RPM speed range. Prelimimary results are presented as well as directions for confirming and/or extending these limits.
