Abstract

Background: Almost 1 million cases of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) are diagnosed annually, 20% occurring in adolescents. The majority are diagnosed in emergency departments. PID is a serious complication of undiagnosed or undertreated sexually transmitted infection (STI) and patients are at increased likelihood to test seropositive for syphilis and HIV. Current Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines recommend HIV screening for all women diagnosed with PID and syphilis screening for all individuals deemed at high risk of infection.
